A note to our community from our President, David Beckman
As our team at the Pisces Foundation ramps up work in 2026, I am not only looking ahead but also reflecting on time I spent just a few weeks ago over the holidays with the people who matter the most to me.
Stepping away from our work and routines to be with loved ones has a way of sharpening our perspective. It reminds us why community and care are so essential—not only in our personal lives, but in the cities and towns we call home, where mutual support is more important than ever. These moments of reflection highlight the different ways we experience and strengthen community, and they reaffirm the importance of acting with intention and integrity as we stay focused on the lasting impact of our collective efforts.
This same spirit of reflection is also guiding the Pisces Foundation. After 10 years of grantmaking, we took a deliberate look at our strategy and approach with a spirit of learning and improvement. It is essential to ensure that our focus is as nimble, relevant, and effective as possible.
If you’ve followed along over the past year or so, you’ve seen how we focused on responding to what we heard from partners about the need to fund productive collaboration and shared tools. We increased our grant budget to help partners working harder than ever. At the same time, we also framed an approach for the future that centers support for goal-oriented collaboration that can lead to stronger alignment among a bigger tent of advocates and allies. This focus recognizes that in most cases we don’t lack the solutions to the challenges we face. But we need greater sway to turn good ideas into actual improvements.
In 2026, you’ll see our updated strategy in action, with more information this spring on a new website, which will debut an updated look for the Foundation that visually underscores the connectivity and collaboration that we believe is indispensable to meaningful progress—progress that sticks. We’ll apply this perspective to our longstanding issue areas of the environment and climate, continuing to support work abating climate super pollutants and ensuring clean water. We are also excited to expand our focus by launching a new multi-year initiative to help San Francisco thrive.
As we begin a new year, I look forward to continuing our work together with renewed purpose and a shared commitment to meaningful, enduring change. We are eager to share more over the coming months and to continue learning alongside you.
With appreciation,
David Beckman
